A capacity audience was treated to a feast of orchestral and wind music on Sunday 13th July, given by the Freeland Orchestra and the West Oxfordshire Clarinets and Wind Orchestra. The whole evening was organised by Wendy Marks who is to be congratulated not only on conducting, but also enticing the players and audience away from the World Cup!
To start, we heard a rousing performance of the overture Tancredi featuring some accomplished woodwind solos, good accompaniment from the strings and a well managed Rossinian crescendo. This was followed by Bizet's L'Arlesienne suite. This substantial piece had some accomplished clarinet and flute solos and apart from a slightly tentative passage from the cellos, was well performed with good dynamics. Elgar's Salut d'Amour had some sensitive string playing and very nice oboe and horn solos. We ended with the well known 'Dance of the Hours' by Ponchielli with nicely stylised unison strings and answering woodwind.
